This BMW 420d arrived with a factory output of 181 bhp and was in good overall mechanical condition. As with many modern diesel vehicles, the owner was looking to improve drivability and performance while keeping reliability and safety as the top priorities. Before any tuning work was carried out, the vehicle underwent a full pre-tuning health check to ensure the engine, turbo, fueling system, and emissions components were operating as expected.
Once confirmed healthy, we carried out a custom ECU recalibration tailored specifically to this vehicle. Rather than applying a generic file, the engine management software was carefully adjusted to optimise power delivery, torque output, and throttle response, all within safe operating limits set by the manufacturer. Particular attention was paid to maintaining smooth power delivery across the rev range, ensuring the car remains comfortable and refined for everyday driving.
Following the calibration, the BMW 420d safely gained an additional 52 bhp over stock. The improvement is most noticeable in mid-range torque, making overtaking easier and reducing the need for frequent gear changes. Despite the increase in performance, the vehicle retains its original drivability characteristics and remains well suited for both motorway and urban driving.
This project was completed for a customer in the Preston area and is a great example of how careful engine optimisation can unlock hidden potential in modern diesel engines without compromising reliability or longevity.
